What is ‘Paint Correction’?

Paint correction is a term that is now commonly used by both professional car detailers and car cleaning enthusiasts worldwide to describe the process of restoring and rejuvenating the paintwork of a vehicle, mostly through the elimination of surface imperfections, that dull, oxidize, or haze the surface by reflecting light off in various directions, therefore detracting from a true and proper, clean, sharp, reflection. These imperfections include things like swirl marks & fine scratches, bird dropping etching & acid rain etching, hologramming & buffer trails, and random isolated deep scratches (or RIDS).

The term paint correction should only really be used if these imperfections are properly removed and are not just merely covered up or hidden with filler based products. The actual corrective process itself comprises of a small amount of clear coat or paint being removed from the surface with the use of abrasive polishes, which are applied and worked in with appropriate polishing machines, in order to level out the surface.

2-Step Paint Correction – Explained

Initial Compounding Phase

The first step in a 2-step paint correction process involves using a cutting compound paired with a polishing pad. This step is designed to remove the deeper scratches, nicks, and blemishes on the vehicle’s surface. The compound works by removing a thin layer of clear coat without cutting too closely to the original paint. Care is taken to ensure that this process is done evenly across the vehicle’s exterior to avoid creating dips or uneven areas.

Inspection and Ceramic Coating Options

The final step is not about correcting the paint but inspecting the vehicle’s surface and buffing any remaining marks. CleanUP Premium Detailing verifies all removable blemishes have been addressed and that the paint correction is uniform before suggesting the addition of a ceramic coating. If you opt for a ceramic coating after that, you will notice that your paint will look glossier, more candy-like, and stay clean longer.

Polishing Phase

After the initial compounding phase, the second step involves switching to a finer polish and a less abrasive pad. This stage is all about refining the work done in the first step, smoothing out any marks left by the compounding, and enhancing the paint’s gloss. The polish used in this step is gentle and works to bring out the shine in the vehicle’s paint. At CleanUP Premium Detailing, we ensure that the vehicle’s surface is smooth and that the shine is uniform across the entire body.
